Welcome to the Game!

Participate in and help grow the world of Varlonan, set in a medieval fantasy setting. Build your skills to earn money from other players for things they need, fight monsters or duel other players, and increase your status so that you are well known not only by other players but also game NPC's. Join quests or finish achievements to grow even stronger. You'll influence the game based on your activity, so get started today!

Game Objective
Getting Started
Step 1 - Register a name on Delphi Forums so you can play.
Step 2 - Read over our rules. Then read up on some site information such as races, classes, and setting to get an idea of who you want your character to be.
Step 3 - Register a character on this site. If you mess up, we can adjust it for you later.
Step 4 - Come and play. If you are new to role play, reading our forum or watching live play in the chatroom helps give you a feel for it. Always feel free to ask the staff questions if you are lost or need some guidance.
STOP!
Don't read further until you are comfortable with the above.
Now That You're Comfortable
Once you've gotten the basics down and started a storyline or some general play, you can now learn a little bit more about the game and how you advance forward in it. The following is NOT required for you to be able to role play in our game. You can write as many stories as you like and never learn these things. They are meant for additional fun, and the reward of advancement however... so we highly recommend learning the game system.
The first thing to know about our system is that its run off dice. You roll the dice, your result will say if you succeed or fail at a specific action. You only need to roll dice during 'Official' events, such as duels or quests or obtaining items. You wont need to roll anything for general play.
Step 1 - Learning what the basic stats mean.
We have 5 basic stats, and a 'life' and 'magic' system. The stats are:
Vigor (VIG) - Your character's strength.
Agility (AGL) - Your character's speed.
Influence (INF) - Your character's skill.
Aptitude (APT) - Your character's intelligence.
Stamina (STM) - Your character's endurance.
Life Points (LP) - You die when if this reaches zero (don't worry, you can usually come back from the dead fairly easy!)
Magic Points (MP) - How much magic your character can cast before becoming exhausted.
These stats will influence your character's ability to do certain actions or how they grow. Battle primarily uses VIG, AGL, and LP. VIG determines how much you damage an enemy. AGL determines how many attacks you can do. You want your opponent to reach zero LP before you do.
INF, APT, and STM are used in battle at times too, but primarily have other uses. Your INF determines Skill (see further down for more on Skills) strength, and when your turn in duels or quests will be. Your APT lets you learn languages, and is also how strong your magic will heal or damage your target. STM is your poison resistence, and how much stress your character's body can take.
Step 2 - Learn how to battle.
Now that you know how the stats work, it'll be easy to learn how to battle. There are 3 turns in a round: Attack, Defend, Damage. You roll an attack, the other person defends, damage is rolled if the attack was successful. Then the opponent attacks, you defend, damage is rolled. Skills will influence battle a bit differently, but without skills here is how basic battle works:
Attacking
Melee - Attacking up close, with a sword for example.
Ranged - Attacking from afar, with a bow for example.
Magic Attack - Dealing magical damage to opponent. Magic is ranged or melee.
Actions
An action takes up your attack turn. An action for example can be switching weapons, using a Skill, using an item, creating distance, etc.
Defending
You defend yourself only when your opponent uses an attack. Defend Options are:
Dodge - Using your AGL, roll higher than the attack to take no damage.
Block - Using your STM, roll to reduce the damage you take from an attack.
Counter - Take an attack's full damage, then roll your attack at half strength to attempt a counter attack. If it hits, you roll half your damage.
Damage
If your attack is not successfully defended against, you will then roll damage. Damage is based off your weapon's base damage, plus your VIG. If you cast magic, damage will be your spell base, plus your APT. A spell's base is the item they used to cast (a wand for example); Unarmed is just APT.
Skills
Your character will have skills based off their race, and their class. Skills cannot be dodged. You can use 1 skill for each INF point you have, per duel, quest or event. To use a skill, you will roll d100. You must get your skill percentage or lower to succeed. If successful, you will then follow the guide of what to do next based on the Skill's description. You strengthen skills with 'Skill Points' or 'Class Points'. Skill points are used on Race Skills/Abilities. Class points are used on Class Skills, Jobs, and Languages. You get 2 of each every time you level.
Step 3 - Leveling
You will grow (level) with 'Experience Points' (XP) which you earn from participating in Official Events, Duels, and from posting in our forum. How quickly you level depends on you and your activity. Each time you level, you will earn points to spend on your character's skills or stats. These points will make your character stronger, and everyones character will be a little different based on their personal preferences of play. Some people might want to be rich, some will want the glory of battle, some just want to play out private storylines, and others will enjoy a variety of group adventures. Higher level characters will be stronger than lower level characters, but don't forget that we all started at the bottom! Keep egos in character ;)
Want More to Do?
We call the following 'Side Quests' because they are additional things you can do for fun, but that aren't required to know or take part in. There are rewards for doing so however, so if you want to get an edge on others, try some of the following.
Status/Titles
You'll notice on your character sheets something called 'Status' and 'Titles'. This is our way of letting your character have extra 'Official' reputation in the game. Instances on quests or other events may come up where a character with a higher Status will have better influence with the NPCs or grant special perks. Royalty for example would trust someone with a higher social status than those who are 'unknown' officially in character. Titles are earned when you've raised your status high enough; these titles give a special bonus to stats or other things. Your character can also pay to portray their social standing through clothing or transportation, lending aid to their desire to appear 'important' to others.
Achievements
A list of special 'achievements' can be found on the site. If you accomplish the specified achievement, you will earn an 'AP' or Achievement Point. Achievement Points act as SP -or- CP. This will give you an edge over others who aren't focused on achievements. Your achievements are listed at the bottom of your sheet. Be mindful of special or time sensitive ones that once gone will never be available again! You can earn achievements from events too.
Monster Battles (Coming Soon!)
Like duels, but don't have enough people wanting to fight you? You can jump into the arena all by yourself and face off against a monster! No GM Required! You'll roll for which monster you're facing. Then you'll roll both your attacks, and what the monster does (though that will be random.) If you survive, post in the forum which monster you faced and what time your battle was. We'll check the logs to make sure you did things right, and then you'll earn the XP and prize for that win.
Own Property
A good way to raise your Status (and add inspiration for play) is to own some property. This can be a home, a public utility, or a shop. Once you have enough gold (currency) you can purchase a plot of land. If your character is skilled at something (e.g.: a blacksmith) you can also have an official shop that gets listed on the site, and you earn the gold for your service.
Player-Run Events
Want to host a quest or event of your own? Let a GM know and we'll assign a staff member to support you, then advertise your event and get all your friends to join. You'll earn some XP and gold for running the event (the GM will award the participant's XP.)
Players who regularly run successful events can later become a GM if they wish it, and earn even more XP and gold for their activity providing the players with some fun. You can also run events by yourself, without a GM, though you wont be paid XP and gold for it. Player-Run Events (with a GM) must get approval before being done.
Adventure
You can discover new areas by traveling. For every 100 posts you do in the forum, you unlock 1 location. You can also unlock locations by taking part in events or quests that venture to those areas. Once an area is unlocked, you are allowed to harvest and shop in that area.
